Hon Nua (Dak Lak province): A hidden gem off central coast

Located less than two kilometers from the mainland, Hon Nua Island has been attracting more visitors due to its pristine scenery and clear water. The island is visible when crossing Ca Pass, which links Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa provinces in central Vietnam.

Hon Nua is about 35 kilometers south of Tuy Hoa, Dak Lak Province. Visitors can reach the island by boat.

The island boasts soft white sand beaches, clear turquoise water, and vibrant coral reefs. Since it has not been heavily developed for tourism, Hon Nua maintains its untouched charm with gently sloping beaches, rugged rock formations, and patches of primary forest.

Photographer Van Ngo, who recently spent two days exploring the island, said the beaches remain free of construction projects, offering visitors a natural setting for activities like swimming, camping, night squid fishing, and snorkeling. “Hon Nua is perfect for those who love wilderness, adventure, and a slower pace of life,” he added.

There are few residents on the island, and no food or beverage services are available. Visitors should bring their own supplies, including drinking water and meals. A small area with freshwater showers is available for public use. Water sports such as stand-up paddleboarding, canoe rides, and banana boat rides are also offered by local operators.

The area has two distinct seasons: a dry season from February to August and a rainy season from September to January. The dry season is considered the best time to visit, with calm sea and clear sky ideal for outdoor activities.

Hon Nua is under the management of a local border guard unit. Visitors planning to camp overnight must register with the authorities before setting up tents. Travelers are also encouraged to keep the island clean by picking up trash and avoiding littering to protect the marine environment.

For those looking for more adventure, Da Bia Mountain nearby offers hiking options. The mountain is 706 meters above sea level, with a roughly three-mile trail leading to the top, where hikers can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding coast.

With its natural beauty and minimal human impact, Hon Nua provides an off-the-beaten-path experience for travelers exploring Vietnam’s central coast.
