Pa Co Commune in the mountainous district of Mai Chau, Hoa Binh Province is an ideal destination for those who like peaceful nature, and who like to explore the culture and customs of ethnic minorities. With majestic mountains and rivers, poetic scenery and unique experiences, Pa Co will definitely bring visitors a complete and memorable trip.

Known as the “kingdom of the Mong people”, Pa Co has a wild, majestic beauty with overlapping mountain ranges and lush green terraced fields. The special feature of Hang Kia Pa Co lies not only in the natural landscape but also in the unique culture of the Mong people, making visitors feel like they are entering a completely different world, close but extremely new and interesting.

Pa Co commune is the main place where the Mong people live, carrying within it a unique and long-standing culture. Mong culture in Pa Co is clearly demonstrated through traditional festivals, colorful brocade costumes, traditional stilt houses, and ethnic musical instruments such as the khen and the tinh. Every detail in the daily life of the Mong people is imbued with a distinct cultural identity, from the way of building houses, farming methods to daily rituals.

The Mong people in Hang Kia and Pa Co communes still preserve many cultural beauties through costumes, speech, customs and traditional crafts... Among them, linen weaving, beeswax painting, and dó paper making, after a period of decline, are being preserved and promoted. Many tourists coming here want to learn and experience this unique craft.

To make dó paper from giang tree, first you have to find young giang tree segments, peel off the hard shell, then mix it with kitchen ash and put it in a cast iron pan to cook. Cooking giang takes up to 3 days and 2 nights. More elaborately, they are then put into sacks, soaked in water for about 10 days, then taken out, washed off the ash and pounded into a fine powder. The pulp is then mixed with clean water, stirred back and forth until the powder is completely dissolved. At that time, women prepare paper molds stretched with a layer of gauze, using a large ladle to scoop the pulp and water solution and spread it evenly on the cloth. The finished dó paper, after being dried in the sun and wind, will be peeled and folded for important family use.

For the Mong people of Hang Kia and Pa Co, dó paper products are always associated with spiritual life. Dó paper is used in holidays, Tet, and worship. On that occasion, small pieces of paper are cut and pasted on the corners of the house, pillars, and household items, with the meaning of sealing, ending the old year and welcoming the new year with luck, goodness, and peace for everyone in the family. What is special is that the paper is used to hang on the wall in the middle of the house with a few rooster feathers attached, hanging on the altar to worship ancestors. Every year, the Mong people change the new paper on Tet to show the filial piety of descendants to their ancestors and family, praying for their descendants to have a happy, prosperous, and successful life.

Along with that is a rich and unique culinary culture and attractive dishes such as: corn wine, thang co, cai meo, local chicken, local pig, sticky rice, wild bamboo shoots... In recent years, community tourism has become a new direction, bringing many development opportunities for the Pa Co people. Visitors here can experience the daily life of the Mong people, participate in activities such as weaving, growing vegetables, cooking, making handicrafts, participating in festivals, or simply chatting together around the fire.
