During the country's history, Nam Dinh Province has formed a diverse cultural heritage treasure that has both the common features of ancient Vietnamese culture, of the Red River rice paddy civilization, and the unique features of the land bordering the sea, easily interacting with Western culture.

Buddhism and Catholicism were introduced quite early in Nam Dinh. This is the homeland of the founder of the Truc Lam Zen sect, Tran Nhan Tong, and the first place that Catholic missionaries chose to stop.

The long-term development of religions in Nam Dinh has left extremely strong, typical marks for the whole country with a system of pagodas and churches. Nam Dinh is one of the major religious centers of the country with the characteristics of Saint worship (Duc Thanh Tran) and Mother worship (Holy Mother Lieu Hanh). In particular, "Practicing the Vietnamese Mother Goddess Worship" was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.

In 2004, Xuan Thuy National Park, along with coastal wetlands in the Red River Delta region of Thai Binh, Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh provinces, was recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. This is a unique ecotourism destination, achieving three criteria: “Highest biodiversity, highest biological productivity and also the most sensitive ecosystem”.
